Privacy Policy

SideSong lets you play a song and listen along with the people playing the same song right now. This page explains what we collect to make that work, who can see it, and how to delete it.

SideSong uses YouTube API Services

Songs play through YouTube's embedded player, and song search and song details come from the YouTube API Services. When you use SideSong you're also using YouTube, so the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy apply. YouTube's player may set its own cookies and collect data under Google's policy.

SideSong does not ask for access to your Google or YouTube account and doesn't read any data from it. If you ever connect a Google account to SideSong, you can remove that access at any time on Google's security settings page.

What we collect

• Account: your email address and password (stored by our sign-in provider; the password is never visible to us), your name, username, bio and profile picture.
• Listening: the songs you play and like, and when. We use them for your history, for Music Twins (people with similar taste) and for your friends' feed.
• What you post: room chat messages, moments (comments at a point in a song), emoji reactions, direct messages and song drops.
• People: your friends, friend requests, people you block, and reports you send.
• Settings: the artists you picked, whether you appear in Music Twins, who can send you friend requests.
• Usage: when you use the app and what you do in it (for example that you played a song, listened with someone, added a friend or sent a message, but never what the message said), and where you first came from (for example a Google search, an AI assistant or a share link; never the full address). We use this only to see whether SideSong works for people and what to improve.
• Notifications: if you turn them on, your browser's push address for this device.
• Song information from YouTube: titles, channel names, thumbnails and lengths of videos, kept so search works without calling YouTube every time. We refresh it at least every 30 days and remove videos YouTube no longer offers.

We don't collect your location or contacts, we don't use advertising trackers, and we don't sell your data.

Who can see what

• Your name, username, bio and picture are visible to other SideSong users.
• Room chat, moments and reactions are visible to anyone who opens that song's room.
• What you play and like is shown to your friends. Your taste is used to suggest you as a Music Twin unless you turn that off in Settings.
• While you're in a room, people in it and your friends can see that you're listening.
• When someone shares a room's link, anyone who opens it (even without an account) sees the song, how many people are in the room, and the first names and photos of the people listening, unless they're invisible in rooms or hidden from Music Twins. The link shows the first name of whoever shared it.
• Your invite link shows your first name and photo to anyone you send it to, even without an account. New people who join through it can become your friends with one tap; anyone else sends you a normal friend request.
• Nights: people who can see a Night (the host's friends, or everyone for a public Night) see its host and who's going. Chat in a Night is visible to everyone in it.
• Blind (18+): the other person sees only an alias, a taste match score and artists you share, never your name or photo, unless you both wave. Chat in a Blind session is deleted when it ends without a mutual wave, unless one of you reports it, in which case it's kept with the report.
• Direct messages are visible only to you and the other person.
• Reports are seen only by the people who run SideSong.

Where it's stored

Your data is stored with the services that run SideSong: Supabase (database and sign-in), Google Cloud (our server) and Vercel (the website). They process it only to provide their service to us.

To find Music Twins whose taste is like yours, we send song titles, artist names and genre tags (never your name, messages or anything else about you) to Google's Gemini API, which turns each song and artist into a "style fingerprint". Your matches are worked out on our own server from those fingerprints.

Cookies and storage on your device

SideSong keeps your sign-in session and a few preferences in your browser's local storage. We don't use advertising cookies. The YouTube player may store cookies under Google's policy.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your data while you have an account. You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Delete account. That removes your profile, listening history, likes, moments, room chat, reactions, friends, friend requests, blocks, settings, notifications, push addresses, usage records and your sign-in, straight away. Direct message conversations you were part of are removed for both people. Reports other people made about you are kept so we can still act on abuse; reports you made are kept without your name.

Children

SideSong is not for children under 13, and you need to meet the minimum age to use YouTube in your country.
